What to expect
One of our research focuses is investigating how eXtended Reality (XR) can support the operation of research airplanes. These airplanes are used to record a wide range of data and serve as portable test platforms, allowing a variety of experiments. They are equipped with numerous sensors to collect data and with onboard hardware to process it during flight. Maintaining such a complex and interconnected system is challenging. To facilitate maintenance and the identification of discrepancies, a digital twin is maintained for each airplane, containing comprehensive information about the physical aircraft and its operational history.
Your tasks
This thesis investigates how found discrepancies identified in the sensor systems of research aircraft can be visualised on a handheld model of the aircraft, providing an intuitive interface that helps guiding maintenance workers locate the affected components. This research aims to understand different possibilities for visualising this information, e.g., using clustering and interaction methods with the handheld visualisation to support the localization and understanding of their physical position.
Your tasks will be:
- Conduct a literature review on AR clustering of position data and fitting interaction methods
- Design an interaction system that provides an intuitive approach to the problem
- Develop a AR visualization by integrating data from the digital twin
- Evaluation using different use cases
- User study
Your profile
- You are studying in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, or similar courses.
- You have a solid knowledge of programming, preferably in C++
- Experience in XR or game development (Unreal Engine, Unity) is beneficial
- And you are a team player with creativity, independence and personal responsibility
