The DLR Institute of Space Research is a world-leading competence centre for optical sensor systems and their use in planetary research, Earth observation and security. In this way, we are expanding humanity's understanding of the formation and development of our planetary system and finding solutions to protect life on Earth. With around 300 employees, we cover the entire development chain from the research idea to the design, construction and verification of instruments and their operational use, right through to the processing, scientific analysis and archiving of the data obtained.
What to expect
The Exoplanets and Planetary Atmospheres department focuses on the discovery and characterization of exoplanets. This position is closely linked to the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) contribution to the PLATO mission, ESA’s third medium-class mission dedicated to searching for transiting exoplanets, including Earth-sized worlds orbiting within their host star’s habitable zone.
Your tasks
Your role will focus on the scientific validation of the PLATO mission, with an emphasis on planet discovery and characterization. In detail, your responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring and ensuring the verification methodology for CCDs and cameras in space instruments.
- Assessing the implementation of requirements that qualitatively impact PLATO mission outcomes.
- Generating simulated datasets for verification purposes.
- Proposing measures for system optimization and resolving technical or project conflicts.
Your profile
- Completed university degree (Master’s or equivalent, e.g., German Diploma) in a natural science discipline (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) or another field highly relevant to this role.
- Solid background in planetary science.
- Research experience in exoplanet science.
- Proficiency with specialized software and simulation tools, including programming experience in Python, Fortran, and/or C/C++.
- Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within large, international teams.
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken, with strong communication skills.
Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
