The Institute of Flight Systems Engineering operates the Air Vehicle Simulator (AVES) with three cockpit modules for various aircraft and an aircraft cabin. These are operated in two fixed-seat simulators and one motion simulator. In addition to the general preparation of flight tests and tests for the development of human-machine interfaces in the cockpit, simulation technology in general and motion simulation in particular are part of the research activities at AVES.

What to expect

The DLR Institute of Flight Systems develops detailed models for various aircraft types, which are used, among others, in the AVES research simulator. Flight test data is analysed using system identification methods to determine the aircraft's aerodynamic properties. Currently, a comprehensive simulation model is being developed for the DLR research aircraft, Dassault Falcon 2000LX ISTAR. We need support in consolidating the flight mechanical simulation model, as well as processing and analysing flight test data.

Your Task

  • Reviewing and adapting an existing simulation model to new implementation guidelines.
  • Identifying time segments in the ISTAR flight test data that are relevant for analysing configuration changes, such as landing gear deployment, spoiler actuation, flaps, and engine dynamics.
  • Learning to use existing data analysis software in MATLAB, identification and modelling of aerodynamic parameters.
  • Developing initial concepts and models for identifying engine thrust dynamics and fuel flow.
  • Improvement and test of sub-system models of the ISTAR aircraft in the simulator.

Your qualifications

  • Current enrolment in a scientific university program in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB / Simulink and good knowledge in flight mechanics and aircraft systems.
  • Experience with programming languages such as C/C++ or Python.
  • Interest in modelling, simulation, flight control, test engineering, or signal processing.
  • High motivation and interest in working independently.
  • Structured approach and initiative.
