The Research Project
Our work focuses on eXtended Reality (XR) and its application in various domains, for instance in a current project the focus is drone operations. In this context, 3D maps in XR can play a key role, e.g. AR minimaps can aid situation awareness, and VR environments can offer full spatial understanding on a 1:1 scale, mimicking real world environment. However, transitioning between AR and VR maps can disorient users due to the big shift in map scale. This thesis investigates how users can transition between these representations and maintain good orientation and overall user experience. The goal is to design, prototype, and evaluate cross-reality map transition methods to improve user experience, and spatial awareness in XR.
The Research Questions
This thesis examines how users can transition effectively between AR minimaps and VR maps. The research focuses on understanding how different transition techniques influence user experience, including cybersickness, cognitive load in cross-reality navigation. A further aim is to identify which transition methods help maintain spatial orientation as users shift between scales and modalities. The students tasks for this thesis include the following:
- Conduct a literature review on AR/VR map design and cross-reality transitions
- Design novel cross-reality transitions specified for navigation through maps
- Implement existing and novel cross-reality transitions in a test environment
- Conduct user evaluations to measure overall user experience and spatial awareness
- Analyze findings and derive design recommendations for future XR-based maps
- Write and document the results
Your Qualification
- Currently enrolled in Computer Science, Informatics, Geo-informatics, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field
- Experience in XR development or game development (Unreal Engine, Unity) is desired
- Experience in C++, C#
- Interest in XR, human factors, and/or interface design
