What to expect
As part of the KARGO project, you will work on a comparative conceptual and preliminary design study for an unmanned aerial vehicle for precise cargo delivery at low altitude. The objective of the project is to develop suitable system concepts for a cost-effective, robust, and modular Low-Altitude Air Delivery drone and to evaluate them based on realistic mission scenarios. You will investigate different design options, derive requirements from operational constraints, and compare their effects on performance, safety, complexity, and economic efficiency. Depending on your focus, flight mechanics, operational, and conceptual aspects can be combined, for example with regard to low-SAIL BVLOS operations, autonomy, robustness, and integration into a modular overall system. This position offers you the opportunity to contribute to a highly relevant research topic in the field of unmanned cargo aircraft systems and to bring your own ideas into an application-oriented DLR research project.
Your tasks
- Familiarization with the boundary conditions and objectives of the KARGO project, as well as with mission-based requirements for a Low-Altitude Air Delivery UAS
- Development of a toolchain for the preliminary design and optimization of a gyrocopter configuration, and comparison with conventional rotary-wing and fixed-wing configurations
- Analysis of the different configurations with regard to performance and economic efficiency
- Preparation, discussion, and documentation of the results in close coordination with the supervising research team
Your profile
- Currently enrolled in a university degree program in aerospace engineering or a comparable field
- Interest in unmanned aerial vehicles and application-oriented research in the field of aviation
- Advanced knowledge of aircraft design
- Analytical and structured approach to work, as well as the ability to independently address technical questions
- Confident use of common tools for technical analysis, modeling, or programming, such as MATLAB, Python, or comparable software
