At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe and sustainable. What to expect
Join an exciting project from day one, help with the setup, commissioning and integration of a coast-based, long-ranged over-the-horizon maritime radar, and get involved in the facility’s research operation. With your expertise in RF technology and radar methods, you will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the system. You’ll be conducting research at the interface between signal processing, data analysis and applied physics, and will focus on the evaluation and further development of analysis methods for maritime ground-wave radars. You will also have the opportunity to explore and push the boundaries of the technology and your methods through exciting field trials, including at sea. Through your work, you will make a significant contribution to the development of modern maritime radar technologies, which are becoming increasingly important for maritime reconnaissance, protection and technological sovereignty.

Your tasks
- You will support your team in setting up and commissioning a coastal-based, long-range maritime radar and actively participate in field trials to test and improve the instrument’s performance, including at sea.
- You will validate the quality, reliability and limitations of standard analysis methods and use these findings to identify areas for methodological improvement.
- You will develop and optimise algorithms for radar data processing (e.g. feature extraction, tracking).
- You will contribute to scientific and technical publications and presentations, and present these in scientific journals and at international conferences.
Your profile
- Completed university degree (Master’s/ university diploma) in engineering or natural sciences (e.g. electrical engineering, physics) or other relevant fields
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas: RF engineering, radar methods, digital signal processing, communications engineering, radar-based remote sensing and analysis of large and complex data sets
- Driving license and ability and willingness to travel for business and conducting measurement campaigns (also at sea)
- Proficiency in English; knowledge of German is an advantage
