At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and to make them adaptable, secure, and sustainable. What to expect
Maritime infrastructures are essential for the functioning of modern societies. Offshore wind farms supply us with green electricity, our natural gas is delivered through LNG terminals and subsea pipelines, and our internet relies on a global network of undersea data cables. However, these infrastructures are increasingly threatened by accidents, disasters, and not least by hybrid attacks — such as sabotage of undersea data cables and pipelines.
We are seeking motivated and dedicated candidates to support the development of simulation tools and methods for the protection of maritime infrastructure. In this role, you will develop a security simulation tool designed to quantify threats to critical assets using realistic attack scenarios that integrate emerging technologies, such as unmanned surface and underwater vehicles (USVs/UUVs). You will actively participate in pioneering research projects and make a key contribution to strengthening the security of ports and coastal facilities.
Your tasks
- Reviewing existing security research approaches and adapting these methods to maritime environments
- Designing simulation models and methodologies to assess and quantify the security status of maritime infrastructure, with a particular focus on port facilities
- Utilizing simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB) to model realistic attack scenarios, integrating threats from Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (UUVs/ USV)
- Presenting research findings and publishing papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as at national and international conferences
- Further academic qualification, including the opportunity to complete a PhD dissertation
Your profile
- A completed scientific university degree (Master’s / University Diploma) in engineering, physics, mathematics or another relevant field of study
- Experience with simulation software or programing tools such as MATLAB or Python
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to conduct independent scientific research
- Good spoken and written communication skills in English
Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
