The Group Earth Observation and Science in GSOC's Mission Operations department operates satellites that are mostly in low Earth orbit and to which there is no continuous contact. The primary task here is to monitor the satellites during a ground station contact, download recorded telemetry and upload timetagged commands covering at least the next ground station contact. This also includes the immediate reaction to space and ground related anomalies and spacecraft  emergencies, so that a 24/7 on-call service by specially trained personnel may be necessary.

What to expect

As a Flight Director (f/m/d) in the EBW group at GSOC, you will be responsible for the operation of satellite missions and the preparation of new missions in a multi-mission context. You will be part of the operations teams of various missions, each consisting of several employees who share the tasks that arise (e.g. daily business, on-call duty, 24/7 shift operation during sensitive project phases). Complex tasks are handled as a team thereby faciliting a deputy concept.

Your tasks

  • development of operational concepts for satellite operation in low earth orbit (e.g. TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X)
  • management of a space flight operations team in the mission preparation phase and in regular flight operations for the CAPTn-1 and GRACE-C projects as well as for equivalent existing and future projects
  • willingness to be on call regularly and to work outside regular working hours or shifts, e.g. during LEOP/campaigns
  • cross-project tasks

Your profile

  • completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in engineering (e.g. aerospace engineering) or natural sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, mathematics) or other degree programmes relevant to the job, such as computer science
  • extensive expertise in the operation of satellites in low earth orbit
  • many years of professional experience in the different phase of mission preparation and operation of satellite missions with a scientific background
  • programming experience in Python or other equivalent languages
  • very good knowledge of English (written and spoken) and good knowledge of German (written and spoken)
  • ability to quickly grasp and clearly present scientific and technical issues
  • good team work skills

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 14 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
