Welcome to the Institute of Flight Systems. Our work focuses on the interaction between aircraft configuration, pilots and modern flight system technology. From flight dynamics to unmanned aerial vehicles, from simulation to real flight tests - we analyse, test and develop innovations that will shape the flying of the future.

Military aircraft represent a highly complex and challenging subject due to their intricate design, high configurability, and sometimes conflicting requirements, such as ensuring effective mission capability while simultaneously meeting civil airspace certification standards. Within this context, the Department of Military Aircraft focuses on flight mechanics, flight control, assistance systems, cockpit design, and aircraft technology for both manned and unmanned military platforms. The department also covers specialized military domains such as aerial delivery and cargo hold design, aerial refueling, advanced air data systems, and operations on unpaved runways.

During your internship, depending on your chosen focus area, you will gain insights into current research in flight mechanics and control, human-machine interaction, or aircraft technology. You will also support us with project work or the setup of simulators and measurement technology.

The minimum internship duration is six weeks; longer internships are preferred. Following your internship, the opportunity to write a thesis (study or degree level) is also available.

Your tasks

  • The tasks depend on your chosen focus area. We will gladly work with you to develop an internship plan based on your interests and our current projects.
  • Focus areas in Flight Mechanics and Flight Control: Modeling, simulation, and control of fighter aircraft and aerial delivery for transport aircraft, air data systems, modeling and automation of aerial refueling.
  • Focus areas in Human-Machine Interaction: Evaluation of interviews, questionnaires, and other data relevant to user interaction; programming prototypes for human-machine interfaces using augmented or virtual reality; selection and evaluation of input and output devices.
  • Focus areas in Aircraft Technology: Development and testing of electronics, measurement and sensor technology, hardware-oriented programming, simulator technology, and wargaming.

Your profile

  • Currently enrolled in a university degree program in Aerospace Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Mechatronics, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a comparable field of study.
  • Prior knowledge in the area selected for your internship.
  • Good command of English, both written and spoken.
