Then this is your place!
The DLR Institute of Maintenance and Modification is dedicated to shaping the future of aviation through research and technology transfer. With its vision of “We Maintain Mobility for a Sustainable Future,” the institute focuses on life cycle analysis, maintenance technologies, and the optimization of digital processes to improve technical operations in aviation.
What to expect
The latest generation of aircraft types are equipped with numerous sensors and other functions to continuously monitor system parameters and determine the health of various systems. Nevertheless, they still have to be checked and inspected manually at fixed intervals in order to fulfil certification requirements. To change this, the DLR Institute of Maintenance and Modification has developed a theoretical end-to-end framework to support the development of certifiable condition-based maintenance (CBM) technologies so that they can also be applied to safety-critical aircraft functions.
As part of your scientific work, you will apply the concept to a number of different use cases, analyse the completeness of the defined process steps, add missing aspects and identify challenges and limitations in the development process of condition monitoring systems. You will regularly discuss the results of your work in industry committees. You will also use your knowledge to train your colleagues to design CBM functions themselves and integrate them into the development processes of future aircraft systems.
Your tasks
- Literature research on the state of the art in the development of aircraft maintenance programmes and on current condition monitoring functions
- Analysis of the developed end-to-end framework for the certification of automated CBM solutions
- Application of the theoretical framework to selected use cases through the definitions of
- Design/qualification requirements for on-board hardware
- Data processing characteristics and secure methods of data transmission
- Design and qualification requirements for ground-side hardware
- Performance requirements for diagnostic and prognostic systems
- Reflection of findings as feedback for the system design process
- Publication of your work results in scientific journals and at suitable conferences
Your profile
- postgraduate university degree (Master or its equivalent) in engineering (e.g. in the fields of aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering) or other fields relevant to the position
