The Institute of Future Fuels contributes to making renewable resources available to replace fossil resources. We develop solutions for how hydrogen and fuels can be produced cost-effectively on an industrial scale from the raw materials water, CO2 and nitrogen using renewable energies.
What to expect
A significant proportion of the energy in chemical reaction system is typically used to compress gases (to adjust the system pressure, for recycling or storage), while at the same time waste heat is often generated. Thermochemical gas-solid reactions can generate a pressure change through a temperature change and thus compress the gaseous reaction partner. This basic principle can be utilised for thermally driven compressors. The class of metal hydrides stands out here, as it offers suitable materials for a wide temperature and pressure range, but is only suitable for compressing hydrogen. This thesis aims to develop and evaluate a new concept based on metal hydrides, though it enables the compression of any gas mixture. For this purpose, two cyclically operated metal hydride reactors are connected to a pressure converter. The system should be designed based on the example of gas recycling in methanol synthesis. Supervision is provided in collaboration with the DLR Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Stuttgart, which has extensive expertise in the field of thermochemical reaction systems.
