The Institute of Data Sciences in Jena focuses on finding solutions to the new challenges of the digital age. Research in this area concentrates on the fields of data management, data analysis and data acquisition. These research activities complement established research areas at other DLR institutes and expand the DLR’s core competencies. In line with the Institute’s thematic focus, three departments have been established, which are in turn divided into nine research groups: Metadata Management, Information Extraction and Interoperability, Data Access and Processing, Machine Learning, Secure Software Engineering, Causal Inference, Distributed Intelligence & Open Innovation, Multimodal and Spatial Information Retrieval, and Data Availability and Provision. Each working group works in close cooperation with other DLR institutes as well as with research and industry partners
What to expect
Data forms the basis for data-driven business models and research. The basis for this is the controlled, fair and self-determined exchange of data between data providers and data consumers within the framework of data spaces and data ecosystems. In this context, data is processed almost exclusively by software. The development of reliable, robust and secure software therefore plays an important role, especially when software is a component of critical systems and infrastructures. A software failure or vulnerability to cyber attacks, for example, can have catastrophic consequences and damage both for satellites and for digitised administrative services. It is therefore important to support developers in the realisation of secure, robust and reliable software systems and architectures. The Secure Software Engineering working group systematically researches methods, tools and processes for secure software development. Its aim is to advance automation in the areas of threat modeling and software supply chain.
