At the Institute of Data Sciences in Jena, we are working to make the data backbone for all of DLR’s areas of application (aviation, space, energy, transport, security) a reality. To this end, we conduct interdisciplinary research and development into methods with a focus on applications such as sustainable and circular processes, resilient supply chains, data-driven value chains and robust decision support. The methods developed in this way are put into practice in cooperation with other DLR institutes and external partners, whether as part of joint projects or through technology transfer activities.
What to expect
For the DLR Institute of Data Sciences in Jena, the ‘Data Access and Processing’ research group is developing innovative methods for the storage, organisation and processing of large multidimensional data sets (e.g. aircraft flight path trajectories, predictive maintenance) on distributed IT infrastructures. The successful candidate will develop the foundations for the data management systems of the future
in collaboration with external and internal partners. He or she will be responsible for analysing complex interrelationships in the storage and management of large, multidimensional datasets from
the field of ‘data-driven maintenance’. Against this background, and in combination with current IT system architectures, novel methods for managing sensor and flight data must be developed. This involves complex research work that requires in-depth, comprehensive knowledge in the field of data management on distributed IT infrastructures. The solutions to be developed must meet high standards in order to be integrated into platform environments. In addition, the coordination of multi-layered interfaces with external partners is required.
Your Tasks
- Independent and autonomous handling of complex research tasks
- Research into the management of large volumes of data (with a particular focus on query processing, indexing and data storage)
- Performance-oriented programming (C/C++, Rust or similar) and multi-platform, embedded programming (Lua or similar), utilising modern hardware
- Database implementations, such as query operators, data structures (e.g. index structures such as B-trees, tries, etc.), or memory managers for multidimensional data (raster data)
- Implementation of software in complex, parallel computer architectures (multi-core, distributed, NUMA-aware, complex memory hierarchies)
- Implementation of projects in the aerospace sector
- Modelling of IT system architectures
Your Qualifications
- A completed university degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics (Diploma/Master’s)
- Ability to work independently and take personal responsibility for complex research tasks
- Practical professional or research experience in managing large volumes of data (particularly in the areas of query processing, indexing and data storage)
- Demonstrable, practical knowledge of performance-oriented programming (C/C++, Rust or similar) and multi-platform, embedded programming (Lua or similar) utilising modern hardware
- Knowledge of database implementation techniques, such as query operators, data structures (e.g. index structures such as B-trees, tries, etc.), or memory managers for multidimensional data (raster data)
- Practical experience in implementing software in complex, parallel computer architectures (multi-core, distributed, NUMA-aware, complex memory hierarchies)
- Experience in practice-oriented projects within the aerospace industry and in the modelling of IT system architectures
- Very good written and spoken German and English
