At the Institute of Maritime Technologies and Propulsion Systems, we provide technological developments that give the maritime industry the confidence to invest in new technologies, thereby accelerating the transformation of transport on water. Transforming maritime applications requires technology development to take the entire energy conversion chain into account. This is translated into practice in cooperation with industry.

What to expect
The Ship Performance department develops methods and models to ensure safe and energy-efficient ship operation in arbitrary environmental conditions. Your task is to further develop and validate a CFD method for complex maritime challenges.

Your tasks

  • You research highly efficient numerical methods for simulating complex flow phenomena in maritime applications.
  • You are responsible for the development, evaluation, and validation of numerical methods of varying complexity for use in maritime flow simulations:
    • First, you familiarize yourself with the existing simulation environment.
    • You then analyze and evaluate the existing numerical methods and plan the optimization of the software system.
    • You develop and implement new numerical methods and carry out the optimization of the simulation environment.
    • You then verify and validate the further-developed simulation environment and apply it in practice.
  • You evaluate the test results, place them in a scientific context, and present them nationally and internationally.


Compensation is based on qualifications and assigned responsibilities, up to pay grade 14 TVöD.


What you bring

  • A completed academic degree (Master's from a university or university of applied sciences, or a Diplom from a university) in engineering, computer science, computational science, scientific computing, or a comparable field relevant to the position
  • Practical research experience (at least 2–3 years) in the numerical solution of nonlinear physical field problems, efficient computational methods for engineering applications, fluid mechanics, and computational fluid dynamics — e.g., gained through a doctorate or other demonstrated research activity
  • Solid knowledge of programming and software development, particularly in scientific computing
  • Solid knowledge of the programming languages C++ and Python
  • Ideally, knowledge of ship theory, hydrodynamics, and maritime CFD applications
  • Excellent command of both English and German
