The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems researches and develops innovative solutions for defossilization and emission reduction in shipping. These are put into practice in cooperation with industry. To this end, the institute is setting up a large-scale infrastructure to test and trial the newly developed energy systems in a standardized laboratory environment and under real conditions. The institute will be divided into seven scientific departments.

What you can expect

The Department of Energy Converters and Systems conducts research into innovative concepts for the efficient generation, distribution, storage and use of electrical, thermal and mechanical energy from fuels and renewable energy sources for mobility on water. You will research the simulation of faults and the development o f fault management strategies in electric and hybrid propulsion systems for ships.

Your tasks

  • You will carry out tests to validate new fault-tolerant energy system concepts and their control under fault conditions. You examine the direct current networks of ships
  • You will be responsible for carrying out tests in the laboratory and on the ship to develop experimental methods and tools for fault injection and validation.
  • You derive additional experiments if discrepancies occur to ensure robust performance across all failure scenarios.
  • You then evaluate the test results, classify them in scientific terms and represent them nationally and 
    internationally.

What you bring with you

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master's) in engineering in the field of electrical engineering, energy technology, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering or other courses of study relevant to the job
  • First professional experience in simulation, modeling and analysis of faults in maritime energy systems or related electrical networks
  • Knowledge of electrical switchgear, control technology, fuel cells, battery technology and Internal combustion engines
  • Initial professional experience in the areas of fault detection, diagnostics and management strategies in electric and hybrid drive systems
  • Experience in planning and conducting scientific experiments or simulation studies
  • Mastery of programming and modeling tools (e.g. MATLAB, Simulink, Python) for the Fault simulation and system analysis
  • Practical experience in electrical engineering
  • Proven expertise in advanced fault detection, diagnosis and management strategies for Electric and hybrid drive systems
  • Extensive English and German language skills
