At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aeronautics, digitalisation, energy, security and transport.  We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation.

What to expect                                                  

The Department of Micro- and Nanosystems Integration develops technologies for the implementation and miniaturization of quantum systems. In doing so, it pays particular attention to the demanding requirements of the aerospace industry. 

Cryogenic temperatures are required for a wide variety of quantum systems. For both single-photon detectors and solid-state quantum systems, cooling to temperatures below 10 K is a critical component for functionality. As of now, there is no cryogenic technology that allows for use under space conditions. Systems based on liquid helium are unsuitable for use on satellites due to their size, energy efficiency, and vulnerability. Therefore, the development of novel cooling technologies is a crucial enabling technology for the implementation of quantum systems in space.

The MEMS Process Researcher in Cryotechnology is responsible for the new subfield of MEMS cryotechnology within the IMN department. Building on the existing technology chain in the field of quantum system miniaturization, a new technological building block is to be developed that will enable MEMS-based solutions for cooling to temperatures below 10 K. This component is to be made available across institutes as a technology building block and holds enormous potential for technology transfer in the future.

Your Responsibilities

  • You will develop miniaturized MEMS thermal switches for the cryogenic temperature range (10–30 K) - from the design of novel process chains in the cleanroom to a functional prototype.
  • You will derive technical requirements from the overall system and design multidisciplinary solutions at the interface of materials science, microsystems engineering, and quantum technology.
  • You will develop test structures and characterization methods for in-process quality assurance and set up a novel cryogenic test rig to evaluate the performance of the developed components.
  • You will perform FEM simulations to predict thermal performance parameters and validate them experimentally using your prototypes.
  • You will plan and implement the integration of the thermal switch into a magnetocaloric cooling chain and conduct a full-system functional demonstration.
  • You will supervise master’s theses in this field, guide students in cleanroom processes and cryogenic measurement technology, and contribute to patents and scientific publications.
  • You will actively help shape the strategic technology field of cryogenic MEMS, independently secure third-party funding for projects, and help define the group’s scientific direction.

Your profile 

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in natural sciences (e.g. physics) or engineering (e.g. from the fields of microsystems engineering, physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a comparable field with an experimental focus) or other degree programmes relevant to the position
  • Several years of proven practical experience in MEMS development and microfabrication: photolithography, dry and wet etching processes, thin-film deposition, wafer bonding, and experience working in a cleanroom and in in-process quality control
  • In-depth knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics, particularly in the cryogenic temperature range; Understanding of the temperature behavior of materials below 77 K
  • Initial experience in at least one of the following areas: operation of cryogenic measurement setups and characterization systems, creation of mask designs using MEMS design tools and layout software, and performing thermomechanical analyses using FEM simulation software (COMSOL, ANSYS, or similar)
  • Extensive project experience in the iterative development of microtechnological components (sensors, actuators, or switching elements) from concept to functional prototype
  • Experience in professional quality management: structured documentation, process approvals, traceability—ideally in a standardized environment (ISO, ECSS, or similar)
  • Willingness to collaborate closely with related disciplines (quantum optics, cryogenics, system integration) and to mentor students

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 14 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
