The DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Oberpfaffenhofen conducts research into the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the ground up to 120 km altitude.
What to expect
The Earth System Model Evaluation and Analysis department develops innovative methods for evaluating and analysing Earth system models in comparison with observational data with the aim of better understanding and predicting the Earth system. The evaluation of Earth system models and the reduction of long-standing systematic errors in Earth system models through machine learning are essential for reliable climate predictions for the 21st century, which are used in climate policy guidelines. The Klim-QML project is developing the first prototype of an Earth system model improved with quantum machine learning.
Your tasks
- programming development and adaptation of (quantum) machine learning models for learning parameterisations for global climate models run on hybrid quantum/conventional computers and coupling these with a climate model
- carrying out climate model simulations
- technical support for department members in the implementation and development of machine learning methods on various HPC/quantum computers
- technical support in the development of diagnostics for the evaluation of climate models with the ESMValTool, and carrying out the evaluation
Your profile
- completed university degree (Bachelor/FH) in computer science, scientific computing, data science or another field of study relevant for the job
- several years of professional experience in computer science, scientific computing, data science or a comparable specialisation
- several years of knowledge of machine learning, big data and software engineering
- very good knowledge of programming with Python
- knowledge of software engineering incl. tools
- interest in quantum computing
- very good written and spoken English skills
