For the operation of spacecraft, it is necessary to provide data exchange and communication between the spacecraft and the various elements of the ground segment, a task that is performed by the Communications & Ground Stations (KOB) organisational unit at the German Space Operations Centre (GSOC). The most important functions in the area of data transmission include the configuration, provision, maintenance and operation of the complete ground segment, including the antenna systems of the satellite ground station in Weilheim, the communication systems and the control centre systems. Telemetry data (information from the spacecraft), command data (control data to the spacecraft) and tracking data (where is the satellite?) are transmitted via the antenna systems of the Weilheim satellite ground station and communication interfaces to external ground stations are operated.
