For the operation of spacecraft, it is necessary to provide data exchange and communication between the spacecraft and the various elements of the ground segment, a task that is performed by the Communications & Ground Stations (KOB) organisational unit at the German Space Operations Centre (GSOC). The most important functions in the area of data transmission include the configuration, provision, maintenance and operation of the complete ground segment, including the antenna systems of the satellite ground station in Weilheim, the communication systems and the control centre systems. Telemetry data (information from the spacecraft), command data (control data to the spacecraft) and tracking data (where is the satellite?) are transmitted via the antenna systems of the Weilheim satellite ground station and communication interfaces to external ground stations are operated.
What to expect
You will assume the central role of Ground Operations Manager (f/m/x) for the satellite ground segment. In close connection with the "Ground Operations" group, whose operational and systems engineering responsibility covers the ground segment for satellite and astronautical space projects, the focus of the position is on the development of concepts - for a smooth operational process, the implementation of regular operations and the support of critical LEOP phases, including the development of the necessary ground station networks. You will be involved in a wide-ranging project portfolio covering missions from CubeSats and LEO satellites to GEO and deep space missions, astronautical spaceflight and support for the LUNA Analogue Facility.
Your tasks
- design, development and project management of ground systems for GEO and MEO missions
- design and development of ground segments for satellite and human spaceflight projects, including project management
- coordination of GSOC operations for ground operations as the responsible Ground Operations Manager for satellite ground segments
Your profile
- completed scientific university degree (Master's/Diploma Uni) in engineering (for example in the fields of communications engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, systems engineering, physics, geodesy) or other degree programmes relevant to the position
- many years of professional experience in the field of satellite technology, satellite data processing or communications engineering
- specialised knowledge in the field of satellite communication or communication networks in the satellite ground segment
- knowledge in at least one of the following areas, for example Data communication, satellite technology, radio technology, radio communication or network technology
- knowledge of the structure of a communication system
