Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 12,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

The institute space operations and astronaut training is the central institution for German spacecraft missions — ranging from satellite missions for Earth observation, communications, and space safety, to human spaceflight, high-altitude research, and exploration. In addition, we are developing innovative technologies to ensure the success of even the most challenging space missions of the future.

What to expect

The position belongs to the mission planning group, which deals with the development and construction of systems, in particular with planning the activities of ground segments and satellites in the orbit and their payloads. Future earth observation missions, the support of constellations including optical communication or the operation of a rover on other planets and moons pose particular challenges in terms of planning and system architecture. These requirements must be analyzed, the feasibility demonstrated and finally the mission planning software system implemented and operated after satellite launch. Complex interrelationships and dependencies in the development of a mission planning software system and its interactions via internal and external interfaces as well as the underlying user requirements are part of the description. Another important aspect is the development and ongoing further development of generic components and services and the testing of new technologies.

Your tasks

  • scala 3 migration of mission planning libraries and frameworks
  • preparation of Scala 3 trainings and documentation for mission planning engineers
  • extend architecture documentation for mission planning libraries and frameworks
  • improve documentation for mission planning libraries
  • integrate mission planning libraries into standard monitoring infrastructure
  • design and implement alerting infrastructure in mission planning frameworks

The tasks can be carried out by arrangement as a student assistant or as part of a student internship or in connection with a thesis (Bachelor/Master).

Your profile

  • you are enrolled in a scientific university degree programme (Bachelor/Master) and are preferably studying computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or a comparable degree programme
  • You have experience in programming (ideally Scala)
  • You have good language skills in English and German (written and spoken)
  • You have experience in Git and Gitlab/Github

Remuneration is up to German TVöD 5 depending on qualifications and assigned tastks.
