Physicist, Engineer (f/m/x) - Verification of entanglement
Job Description
Req ID:  2241
Place of work:  Ulm
Starting date:  1.9.2025
Career level:  Experienced professionals
Type of employment:  Part time, Full-time
Duration of contract:  2 Jahre

Remuneration: Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector - Federal Government (TVöD-Bund)

Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies n Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aeronautics, digitalisation, energy, security and transport. We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation.

What to expect

The Quantum Information and Communication department (QT-QIC) investigates questions of quantum information by using synergies between theoretical and experimental basic research and develops technological applications in collaboration with industry. Topics include research into quantum computing hardware and software, the realization of quantum cryptography and global quantum communication, for example on satellites. Research is also being conducted into how to communicate efficiently in quantum networks over long distances and at high loss rates.

We explore sources of quantum light and develop methods for their characterization. The verification of entanglement plays an important role for driving entanglement-based applications in quantum networks. Work together with us on developing a versatile source of entangled pairs that will be tested in a real environment.

Your tasks

  • You will be studying the topic of quantum light sources and entanglement-based applications in quantum networks.
  • You will study entangled pairs with emphasis on the manipulation and verification of their coherence.
  • You will build up and carry out experiments in our laboratories, e.g., on the generation and verification of entanglement as well as on the testing it in a real environment.
  • You will analyze the experimental data and take part in further scientific planning in this research area.
  • You will disseminate the scientific results to project partners and to other international actors within the discipline as well as present them in national and international conferences and meetings.

Your profile

  • completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in natural sciences (e.g. physics, mathematics, informatics) or engineering (e.g. from the field of optical quantum technologies) or other degree programmes relevant to the job
  • solid understanding of quantum physics, optics & photonics and (if applicable) experimental physics (especially in quantum optics and/or non-linear optics)
  • skills in carrying out experiments including for example experience in practical laboratory work
  • very good IT skills and basic programming skills for example from data analysis and/or physical modelling, e.g., in python, mathematica and/or matlab
  • fluent spoken and written English
  • ability to work in a team with scientists and technicians

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.

We offer

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.

We look forward to getting to know you!
