The Institute of Communications and Navigation at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is dedicated to mission-oriented research in selected areas of communications and navigation. The work ranges from theoretical foundations to the demonstration of new procedures and systems in a real environment and is embedded in the DLR programs Space, Aeronautics, Transport, Security and Digitalization.The Nautical Systems department of the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation develops and tests new procedures and technologies for shore-based and on-board support in ship navigation, among other things.

What to expect

The focus of the “Traffic Situation Systems” (VLS) working group is on the fusion and evaluation of data on moving objects from different sensors and sources. The aim is to derive a robust traffic situation picture from cooperative and non-cooperative systems. To this end, the working group primarily researches stochastic methods of sensor fusion, methods from the fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as their efficient implementation on multi-core architectures with the aim of generating real-time situation pictures. As far as it is compatible with our operational procedures, we offer you the opportunity to carry out your work under the conditions of mobile working. In addition, you can organise your working hours flexibly, provided that you work during core working hours.

 

 

Your tasks

  • advancing the state of the art in the field of RADAR-based tracking of ships and demonstrating its performance in measurement campaigns
  • development of novel algorithms for tracking extended objects using static and dynamic X-band RADAR stations
  • conducting intensive literature research in the field of multisensor extended target tracking for RADAR and LiDAR based sensor sources
  • development and implementation of classical and neural network based algorithms for object tracking in Python, C++ and CUDA

 


Your profile

  • You have a university degree (Master's/Diploma Uni) in natural sciences (e.g. physics, applied mathematics) or engineering (e.g. computer science, control engineering) or other courses relevant to the job
  • You already have a basic knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis
  • You already have experience in analyzing large data sets (BIG data) and have research experience in the field of machine learning (ML) and/or artificial intelligence (AI)
  • You have experience in developing applications for processing data in real-time in Python, C++, CUDA or OpenCL
  • You have the ability to write journal articles and technical documentation
  • You are able and willing to travel on business trips
  • very good command of English (written and spoken)
