Welcome to the Institute of Flight Systems. Our work focuses on the interaction between aircraft configuration, pilots and modern flight system technology. From flight dynamics to unmanned aerial vehicles, from simulation to real flight tests - we analyse, test and develop innovations that will shape the flying of the future.

What to expect

In the context of the D-Resilience project, research is being carried out into how mesh networks can be used in the context of a distributed avionics platform. A central question is whether and how this technical approach can ensure reliable communication between tasks of safety-critical avionics applications in the same aircraft, in a network of aircraft and with ground-based stations.

Your tasks

  • Your task is to evaluate existing network protocols from applications like wireless mesh networks and vehicular networks with regard to their suitability for distributed and safety-critical avionics applications.
  • You will design and model representative use-cases in the network simulator OMNet++.
  • You will create with a suitable methodology to evaluate existing network protocol models for these use-cases.
  • Among other things, it is of interest whether the reliability determined is sufficient in relation to aviation approval criteria and if safety could be improved through the combined use of different network technologies.

Your profile

  • You are currently studying for a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • good comprehension of distributed systems and network protocols
  • practical experience with designing experiments or simulation engineering
  • practical experience with data analysis tools like SciPy, RStudio or similar
