The Institute of Networked Energy Systems pursues the overarching goal of making the energy transition in the economy and society successful through targeted research. To this end, transformation strategies and technical solutions are developed that enable efficient and system-beneficial linking of the electricity, heating, transport and industrial sectors. Together with partners from industry and research, the focus is on developing a holistic understanding of the system and effective system solutions. As a result, the institute and its approximately 190 employees - including around 150 scientists - address two key transfer levels: Technology transfer through technical solutions and knowledge transfer with the results of modelling and analysis tools developed in-house.

What awaits you

 

The Energy System Technology department focuses on the interaction between system-relevant energy technologies within decentralised networked structures. In the distribution grid in particular, we are striving for new architectures for the energy systems of the future that ensure robust grid operation even under the influence of fluctuating feeders.

The Flexibilities and System Services research group deals with the question of which tools, operational management strategies and additional infrastructures are required in order to be able to operate electricity grids in a stable, reliable and robust manner.

In our VEMS and DESYS projects, in which you can support us, simulative analyses of electricity grids are carried out that reflect future scenarios. Different operating situations are considered, such as the integration of newcharging stations or the disruption of an offshore wind farm. The aim of these analyses is to estimate the robustness, resilience and operational reliability of such future electricity networks and to develop recommendations for action to the grid and operators.

 

Your tasks

  • You will use Python to analyse and prepare data, e.g. generation and load profiles, for integration into grid analyses.
  • You will play a key role in the development and implementation of PowerFactory simulation models for the analysis and optimisation of grid operation.
  • You will support our team in carrying out grid analysis in PowerFactory after prior software training.
  • Network analyses are visualised by you, e.g. graphical highlighting of weak grid regions.

 

What you bring with you

  • You are currently studying for a Master´s degree in the field of energy technology, electrical engineering, physics or a comparable degree programme.
  • You already have some experience of working with the Python and Gitlab.
  • You already have initial knowledge and understanding of electrical networks and modelling principles.
  • You are excited and passionate about electrical grids, and interested in scientific work and working in a dynamic and diverse team.
  • Very good knowledge and expression in English and German round off your profile.
