The Institute of Vehicle Concepts (FK) of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is internationally recognised for the design of future road and rail vehicles that enable climate and environmentally friendly mobility while being affordable and user-friendly at the same time.
What to expect
The Institute of Vehicle Concepts is seeking enthusiastic students to support our research in rail propulsion and energy systems. Our work focuses on developing and analyzing innovative energy-saving concepts through advanced simulations. Your mission will be to explore and advance simulation-based research in railway propulsion and energy systems. You will work on developing concepts, models and strategies to improve efficiency and sustainability of current railway systems.
Your tasks
Simulation and Optimization of Alternative Propulsion Systems: Designing and evaluating hydrogen- and battery-powered rail vehicles using measurement data analysis. Furthermore, exploring novel operational concepts and energy management strategies to improve efficiency.
Thermal Energy Management: Investigating the energy demands of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in rail vehicles.
Novel Operational Concepts: Designing operational concepts and control strategies for smart trains to enhance efficiency and performance in modern railway operations.
The specific topic will be formulated in collaboration with you, aligning team priorities as well as individual interest.

Your profile
- Student from the field of applied computer science, engineering, natural sciences or similar
- Interest in model-based development
- Familiarity with python, MATLAB/Simulink and/or Dymola
- Thermodynamics knowledge (if applicable for chosen topic)
- Basic knowledge of alternative drivetrains and energy distribution (if applicable for chosen topic)
- Good written and spoken English and / or German skills
- Independent and proactive work style
Remuneration is up to the German TVöD E05 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
