Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

The Institute of Vehicle Concepts (FK) of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is internationally recognised for the design of future road and rail vehicles that enable climate and environmentally friendly mobility while being affordable and user-friendly at the same time.

We research and demonstrate the required key technologies and maintain close cooperation with other scientific institutions as well as industrial and political bodies.

What to expect

The Institute for Vehicle Concepts is seeking dedicated students to support our research in railway traction and energy systems. Our work focuses on the development and analysis of innovative, energy‑saving concepts using a variety of simulations. Your role will involve exploring and advancing simulation‑based research in railway traction and energy systems.
You will contribute to the development of concepts, models, and strategies aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of current railway systems. Hereby is the battery a core component in the vehicle system

Your tasks

  • Develop an understanding of the state‑of‑the‑art: battery architecture, cell chemistries, cell modelling, cell aging effects and models.
  • Compare different cell aging model variants according to required input/ output variables and parameters
  • Define the requirements for a model that estimates cell aging within the overall system boundary conditions.
  • Create a lean evaluation method to choose the most suitable aging model for use in the system‑level design
  • Parametrize and validate a battery‑aging model based on literature parameters for exemplary cell chemistries such as LF(M)P, NMC, LTO

Your profile

  • Student in applied computer science, engineering, natural sciences, or comparable fields of study
  • Independent and proactive working style
  • Interest in model-based development
