The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has established a national Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC³) with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg). The RSC³ implements the Responsive Space Capabilities research program both inside and outside DLR by exploiting the synergies between civil and defense technology research and building a national network of research, academia, industry and users.
What to expect
Responsive Space is the capability to respond short-term needs through the rapid deployment of small satellites, also known as Responsive Launch, or the reconfiguration of space systems already in use. Furthermore it increases the resilience of critical space infrastructure and serves as a deterrent by replacing failed capabilities, expanding existing ones, or deploying new capabilities. In a systematic approach, the Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC³) conducts the research in four departments (launch segment, space segment, ground segment and technology demonstration) and clusters the competences of other institutions within the DLR. The proposed Bachelor's thesis will be conducted within the launch segment of the RSC³. The launch segment provides the capabilities and facilities to design, manufacture and test hybrid rocket engines with hydrogen peroxide. For the injection of liquid hydrogen peroxide into the combustion chamber the spray characterization is important. For this reason a measurement concept has to be developed and tested.
Yout tasks
- You gain insight and build up knowledge in the field of spray characterization by a literature survey on shadow imaging techniques and spray characterization
- You design and construct a measurement concept for shadow imaging on the test bench.
- You script the analyis of the measurement data in Python.
- You carry out an experiment and analyse the outcom by typical spray parameters.
- You conclude your work concisely, while addressing the gaps and indicating future developments.
Your profile
- interest in the field of liquid injection in rockets
- basic knowledge of programming, preferably with Python
- language skills in German and/or English
- motivation and commitment
- ability to work in a team
Remuneration is up to the German TVöD E3 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.
We look forward to getting to know you!
